Vector Program Oddities

Last updated June 15, 2026

Depending on the program used some do some odd stuff when saving or working with SVG. Here's a list of stuff to watch out for.

Inkscape

  1. Using the Export Tool with Selection chose will still include layers that are empty. Checking the file after it's saved to clean up empty extra layers is recommended.
  2. Saving a SVG as Plain SVG instead of Inkscape SVG removes all layer names.

Affinity

  1. Exporting an SVG on Affinity requires the Flatten Transforms option to be selected or tons of extra "layers" are generated.
  2. Exporting an SVG while selecting Selection Only instead of Selection Area removes all layer information you have even if they are selected.
  3. Fills should not be used as they are raster and affinity does not support any type of vector fills. The way they are stored will also be removed by the SVG validator.
  4. Exporting SVG files saves the Width and Height of the file as 100% instead of a measurement or unit which causes issues with other programs and uploads as you are required to enter the measured size from Affinity. This can be avoided for uploading to Pattern Archive by using the SVG (digital - high quality) preset as we handle fixing the file at upload.
